Dataset Overview
This report presents an exploratory, inductive discourse analysis of posts collected from the r/ADHD subreddit on Reddit, covering the period January 2023 to February 2026. The full dataset comprises 426,224 posts across 38 months. A stratified random sample of 200 posts was selected for AI-assisted discourse analysis, sampled proportionally across the full time range to ensure temporal representativeness.
This analysis is exploratory and inductive in character: no predetermined thematic categories were imposed. Themes, discourses, and patterns were allowed to emerge from close engagement with the data, in keeping with the interpretivist epistemological position of the broader research project.

Discourse Analysis: Synthesis
The following synthesis was produced through AI-assisted inductive analysis of the sampled posts. All outputs are explicitly provisional, requiring critical review and validation by the researcher. The LLM functions here as an analytical instrument — surfacing patterns for interpretive engagement — not as an autonomous analytical authority.
1.1 Sample Characteristics
The dataset represents a cross-section of community discourse during a period of considerable flux in ADHD's public profile and treatment landscape. Posts span from periods of relative stability in the medication supply chain to documented shortages that generated significant community anxiety and discussion.
The r/ADHD community functions as a primary site for knowledge exchange, emotional regulation, and identity construction for adults navigating a condition that remains significantly under-resourced in formal healthcare settings.
— AI-generated synthesis note · Subject to researcher reviewKey Emergent Themes
Eight major thematic clusters emerged from inductive analysis across the 200-post sample. These are presented as provisional analytical categories, subject to refinement through researcher-led close reading:
Identity & Self-Understanding
Construction of ADHD identity; late diagnosis narratives; reframing personal history through ADHD lens; neurodiversity vs deficit framings.
Medication Discourses
Medication experiences, shortages, dosage navigation; relationship with prescribers; stigma around stimulant medication; supply chain anxiety.
Coping Strategies & Practical Advice
Peer-generated strategies for daily functioning; productivity systems; environmental modifications; lived experience knowledge.
Emotional Labour & Seeking Empathy
Community as emotional support space; validation-seeking; shame, frustration, exhaustion; relational impacts of ADHD.
Knowledge & Misinformation
Circulation of claims about ADHD neurobiology; contested information; community fact-checking; relationship to clinical authority.
Access & Systems Navigation
NHS vs private diagnosis pathways; waiting lists; workplace accommodations; disability rights; insurance and access barriers.
Comorbidity & Complexity
Intersections with anxiety, depression, autism, trauma; complexity of differential diagnosis; integrated lived experience.
Community Norms & Platform Culture
r/ADHD community rules and moderation; discourse about the subreddit itself; ingroup/outgroup dynamics; platform-specific practices.
Document Status & Next Steps
This report is a working document produced during Phase 1 of the ADHD Discourses on Social Media research project. It represents the output of AI-assisted first-pass analysis and is explicitly framed as provisional.
Next steps in the analytical pipeline include: researcher-led close reading of the full 200-post sample; refinement and consolidation of thematic categories; application of formal discourse analytic frameworks; anonymisation of all verbatim examples; and preparation for incorporation into conference papers and journal articles.
The full methodology governing data collection, sampling, and analytical procedures is documented in the companion Methodology Chapter. The live ADHD Discourse Analyser tool — available on the project hub page — allows interactive exploration of the dataset.
